(a) One of several species of valuable food fishes of the genus Epinephelus, of the family Serranid[ae], as the red grouper, or brown snapper (Epinephelus morio), and the black grouper, or warsaw (Epinephelus nigritus), both from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.
