freedictionary.org is a free online English dictionary. You can use it without creating an account and without giving us any personal information. This page explains the small amount of data that is processed when you visit.

What we collect

• Server logs. Like every website, our server records the address of each page requested, the time, your IP address and browser type. We use these logs only to keep the site running, to block abusive traffic and to see which words are looked up. Logs are deleted automatically after 14 days.
• Feedback form. If you send us a message through the feedback form, we receive the name, e-mail address and message you enter. We use them only to read and answer your message. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which may set its own cookies.
• Search history. Words you look up are not tied to you. We keep no user profiles.

Advertising

We show advertisements served by Google AdSense to keep the dictionary free. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and read how Google uses data from partner sites at policies.google.com.

If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for consent before any advertising cookies are set. You can change your choice at any time through the consent dialog.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how many people use the site and which pages are popular. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes your IP address in anonymised form. You can block it with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

Cookies

The dictionary itself does not need cookies. Cookies on this site come from Google AdSense, Google Analytics and reCAPTCHA as described above. You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings; the site will keep working.

Third-party content

Pages load fonts, styles and scripts from public content delivery networks (jQuery, Bootstrap, Font Awesome). Those providers receive your IP address when the files are fetched. Definitions come from WordNet 3.0 (Princeton University) and the GCIDE edition of Webster's Dictionary; no data about you is sent to them.

Children

The site is suitable for all ages and knowingly collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Your rights

You may ask us what data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to its use. In practice this concerns feedback messages only. Contact us through the feedback form and we will reply by e-mail.

We will update this page when our practices change and show the date of the last update at the top.
