How the estimate works
The 50,000 most common English words are split into six bands by frequency (1–2,000, 2,001–4,000, 4,001–8,000, 8,001–16,000, 16,001–32,000 and 32,001–50,000). You answer five questions from each band. For every band we estimate the share of words you know, subtract a correction for lucky guesses (a wrong answer cancels a third of a right one, as in four-option tests), and add the bands up. The result is a rough estimate: take the test again with a different set of words to see how stable it is.
