call or cry.] (Zool.)
The European green woodpecker (Picus viridis syn. Genius
viridis). It is noted for its loud laughlike note. Called
also eccle, hewhole, highhoe, laughing bird,
popinjay, rain bird, yaffil, yaffler, yaffingale,
yappingale, yackel, and woodhack.
