Rheumatism \Rheu"ma*tism\, n. [L. rheumatismus rheum, Gr. ????,

   A general disease characterized by painful, often multiple,
   local inflammations, usually affecting the joints and
   muscles, but also extending sometimes to the deeper organs,
   as the heart.
