Phainopepla \Pha*i`no*pep"la\, n. [NL., fr. Gr. faeino`s shining + pe`plos robe.] (Zool.) A small crested passerine bird (Pha["i]nopepla nitens), native of Mexico and the Southern United States. The adult male is of a uniform glossy blue-black; the female is brownish. Called also black flycatcher. [1913 Webster]
